I’m pleased to announce that Microsoft announced that SQL Server 2008 is now supported for ConfigMgr SP1.
A clean installation of ConfigMgr RTM on SQL Server 2008 is not supported. You should upgrade instead. If you upgrade the site server database to SQL 2008 you should apply the following hotfix:

Microsoft released an update for the ConfigMgr 2007 Asset Intelligence Catalog. The update will fix some known issues. The update is only applicable for ConfigMgr 2007 SP1. For previous versions of ConfigMgr and SMS, Microsoft will release an update later.

Microsoft released the R2 (RTM) of Configuration Manager 2007. The evaluation version is available for download. The non-evaluation product is not a free download unless you are a software assurance customer. If so, then you will be able to download the non-evaluation version.
